What happened to Omegle?
Omegle shut down for good in November 2023, after more than a decade of pairing strangers for random video and text chat. Its founder pointed to growing moderation demands and legal pressure as the reasons for closing it down. That left a real gap for the millions of people who used it regularly — the list below covers where that format lives on in 2026.
Best Omegle alternatives, ranked
1. Uhmingle — Best overall, free with no sign-up
The closest match to the original Omegle experience: instant random video and text chat, interest tags, and a country filter, all free with nothing gated behind a premium tier. Every chat runs through active AI-assisted moderation with a one-tap report button. Try Uhmingle →
2. OmeTV — Simple, mobile-friendly matching
A widely used option with a straightforward video-first interface, popular on mobile. See how it compares to Uhmingle on our OmeTV page.
3. Chatroulette — The original random video format
Chatroulette predates Omegle and popularized the "click to connect, click Next to skip" format in the first place. Still running today. More detail on our Chatroulette page.
4. Camsurf — Moderation-first random video chat
Known for leaning heavily on moderation and a cleaner matching queue, aimed at cutting down on low-effort or inappropriate matches.
5. Shagle — Random chat with added filters
Offers gender and location filters on top of the standard random matching format, with some features reserved for a paid tier.
6. Emerald Chat — Interest-based matching with extras
Built around interest tags and group chat options alongside the usual one-on-one random format.
7. Bazoocam — Random video chat with built-in games
Adds mini-games you can play with your match on top of standard random video chat, a different spin on the format.
Free, unlimited, and nothing held back for later
A lot of random chat sites keep their best filters, higher match quality, or extra features behind a subscription. Uhmingle keeps video chat, text chat, interest tags, and the country filter free from the first click, with no daily limit. Pages for the USA, the UK, India, and Germany are also built in if you want to narrow matches by region.
Whichever site you pick, a few basics help
Across any random chat platform, keep your full name, address, and financial details out of the conversation, and use the report button the moment something feels off instead of trying to argue it out. On Uhmingle specifically, every chat runs through AI-assisted moderation with human review behind it.
